Ph.D. Positions
Join our team for Fall 2025 in the Edge and BioMedical Intelligence (EBMI) Laboratory within the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Texas 79968, USA. The research themes at the EBMI laboratory include AI-enabled biomedical instrumentation, biomedical signal and image analysis, and edge AI. We also delve into the synergy between machine learning and semiconductors, intelligent sensors, and integrated circuits.
Fully funded Ph.D. positions are available with financial support, a tuition waiver, and health insurance benefits. We seek students eager to learn and be active team players to collaborate in a supportive environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Enthusiasm for research and a willingness to learn are the key . We can work together to bridge any skills gap from the following!
Strong academic background with a B.Sc. degree in computer/electrical/electronics/communication/biomedical engineering, or a related field.
Keen interest in applied artificial intelligence (machine learning and deep learning) for healthcare and microelectronics applications. Any experience with one of the machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.) would be advantageous to get started quickly.
Programming skills in at least one of these languages: C/C++, Python, or Matlab. Familiarity with hardware description languages (e.g., VHDL, Verilog, etc.) is beneficial.
Prior hands-on experience with any hardware nodes (FPGAs, microcontrollers, ASICs, etc.) is a plus.
How to Apply:
Interested students are encouraged to fulfill the ECE Ph.D. admission requirements and apply within the graduate school application deadline. In your Statement of Purpose, please indicate your interest in working with Dr. Shuvo in the EBMI lab. Feel free to send an email to [mhshuvo@utep.edu]. In your email, you may consider including:
Your interest in specific research areas within the EBMI lab.
Any relevant skills or experiences you have.
Your CV and transcripts.
A writing sample (e.g., paper, project report, thesis, etc.).
We look forward to hearing from you!
MS Positions
Students interested in pursuing a Master of Science (MS) by thesis in the areas of edge intelligence and biomedical computing are encouraged to apply to the MS in Computer Engineering program.
Currently admitted UTEP students interested in any of the research areas of the EBMI lab are encouraged to contact Dr. Shuvo via email (mhshuvo@utep.edu). Prior knowledge of at least one programming language, experience with machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL), and working experience with one or more hardware technologies (e.g., FPGA, microcontroller, ASIC) are preferred.
The ECE department at UTEP offers both a MS in Computer Engineering and a MS in Electrical Engineering.
Undergraduate Research Opportunities
If you are a UTEP undergraduate or a fast-track BS/MS student interested in pushing the boundaries of Computer Engineering at the intersection of AI and edge computing, join the EBMI lab as an undergraduate researcher! Please send your resume and a statement of interest to Dr. Shuvo at [mhshuvo@utep.edu].
The ECE department at UTEP offers both a BS in Computer Engineering and a BS in Electrical Engineering.
